The Department of Foreign Languages with a Latin Language Course is contemporary with the University’s oldest departments; its history dates back to 1935. Until 1953, there were two separate departments: the Department of Latin (headed by Senior Lecturer G.P. Mirolubov) and the Department of Foreign Languages (headed by Senior Lecturer Tamara Antonovna Skompskaya). In 1953, these departments were merged; T.A. Skompskaya became the head of the Department of Foreign Languages with a Latin Language Course.

In the early decades, foreign and Latin languages were taught to students of three faculties: General Medicine, Pediatrics and Dentistry. Since 2001, and up to the present, in connection with the organization English-medium instruction, the department takes an active part in training the faculty of VolgSMU to provide instruction in English.

In 2004, teaching of foreign and Latin languages was initiated for students of the Clinical Psychology and Social Work faculty. Methodological work is underway to develop teaching aids that meet the requirements of pedagogy and the methodology of teaching foreign languages in non-linguistic higher education institutions.

Since 2011, with the emergence of a new medical profile specialty, Medical and Preventative Care, as well as university programs such as Biotechnical Systems and Technologies, Biology, Management, active methodological work has been undertaken to develop teaching materials for these specialties.

Research activities at the department have been conducted since 1994. Over the past 15 years, the department staff have defended one doctoral dissertation and 13 candidate dissertations.

The department is staffed with young educators whose scientific interests include philology, pedagogy, teaching methodology of foreign languages, sociology, philosophy, and cultural studies. New research projects are being undertaken within these areas.

Over its 80-year history, the department's staff has made a significant contribution to the study of philology, pedagogy, and the methodology of teaching foreign and Latin languages at the university and is prepared to address the challenges of modern higher medical education.

The department staff actively engages in educational and methodological work.
